Frequently Asked QuestionsWhen and where did you graduate?
The British School of Osteopathy (now called Health Sciences University) in 1995, directly opposite the Canadian High Commission on Trafalgar Square in London, England. This was a full-time four year clinically supervised program. What type of hands-on treatments do you use? The original traditional MSK manipulation styles of the founder of osteopathy, Dr AT Still, and generations of British-trained osteopaths since. As with Dr Still, I do not use cranio-sacral or visceral techniques, which were created by others many decades after his passing. Why Clinical Osteopathy? I also possess a Master's degree with a distinction grade (the highest available) in Advanced Professional Practice (Clinical Sciences). This specialises in critical thinking, and combining osteopathic practice with our modern understanding of how pain functions in the real world and how biomechanics, alignment, anatomy, scans and posture are not predictable indicators as we once thought. In summary, it's normal to be "wonky" if you function well enough. Who has had the greatest influence on your osteopathic career? I never had the opportunity to meet him, but the work of British doctor and osteopath Dr Alan Stoddard (1915-2002) has shaped me most. Stoddard took the original osteopathic philosophy and proceeded to do what the founder, Dr AT Still (1828-1917), had also done and applied the medical knowledge of his time. In undertaking my Master's degree I have tried to follow in both of their illustrious footsteps by combining the original structural osteopathy with our modern understanding of pain and movement. What is a "GOT"? A General Osteopathic Treatment (GOT) is an everyday term in the UK for an osteopathic wellness (maintenance) check up. We listen, assess and fine-tune with treatment the findings of the day to keep you optimized over time. Most people get "checked over and loosened off" every one to three months. Can I claim through my extended benefits policy? First, it depends whether osteopathy is part of your coverage. If so, there is a very high chance that you can. However, some providers do have exclusions, even with coverage, so please check. Direct-billing is not available. Who are you registered with? - Association Québécoise des Ostéopathes - General Osteopathic Council (UK) - Institute of Osteopathy (UK) Are you British or Canadian? Proudly both. British born and a Canadian citizen. |
